IACHR urges Venezuela to combat impunity for human rights crimes

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) requested the Venezuelan authorities, through a statement, combat human rights violations that have been recorded in the country and have gone unpunished.

The organization noted that it is important for the State to reconstruct its administration and that there is a division of public powers to achieve positive results.

“A genuine commitment to the fight once morest impunity requires that the Statetake immediate steps to restore the separation and independence of the Public Prosecutor’s Officeof the justice system in general and of other public powers,” the text reads.

The IACHR also alleged that the opening of an office in Caracas of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the invitation to members of the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights must be accompanied by a real commitment from the authorities.

«According to a report by the Panel of Independent International Experts of the Organization of American States (OAS), in a sample of 183 cases of conduct that might constitute crimes once morest humanity, There were only 12 trials, or a scant 6%; and in 52.5% of these cases the State has not initiated any legal proceedings.“, the IACHR stressed.

The institution’s statement comes a few days following relatives of political prisoners denounced that these their human rights are being violated.
