IACHR delegation to visit Guatemala to observe human rights situation – 2024-07-11 07:45:30

This Wednesday the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) announced that it will carry out a visit in loco a Guatemalafollowing an invitation from the Government.

According to the statement issued by the IACHR on July 10, the visit, which was will be from July 22 to 26will be to “observe the impacts of the process of weakening democratic institutions and judicial independence in Guatemala.”

“In particular, you will observe the human rights situation of groups in especially vulnerable situationsfrom the ethnic, racial and gender perspectives,” details the IACHR.

Other issues that the IACHR will take into account during its visit to Guatemala will include citizen security, justice, economic, social and cultural rights, freedom of expression and the right to memory.

The IACHR delegation that will visit Guatemala will be made up of the president Roberta Clarkethe first vice president, Carlos Bernalthe second vice president, Jose Luis Caballero; the Commissioner Arif Bulkanand the Commissioners Andrea PochakRapporteur for Guatemala and Gloria De Meesthe Executive Secretary.

They will also be Tania Reneaum, the Deputy Executive Secretary, Maria Claudia Pulidothe Chief of Staff, Patricia Colchero and specialists from the Executive Secretariat, as well as the Special Rapporteurs for Freedom of Expression, Peter Cow and on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Javier Palummo.

In addition to being in Guatemala City, the IACHR will also be in departments such as Alta Verapaz, Izabal, Petén, San Marcos, Sololá, Totonicapán and Quetzaltenango.

“The delegation will hold meetings with representatives of the different branches of governmentand will hold meetings with activists, human rights defenders and justice operators,” the document states.

Following the visit, the IACHR delegation will give a press conference on July 26 to present their comments.
