A bicycle test track in the English Garden, concerts on Königsplatz, car manufacturers on Odeonsplatz and a discussion forum in front of the town hall – from September 5th to 10th, Munich city center will be the stage for the IAA Mobility for the second time. The organizers, the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and Messe München, are expecting significantly more visitors this year than at the first edition two years ago: “In 2021, the IAA Mobility still took place under corona restrictions, which are now abolished”. , said IAA Managing Director Jürgen Mindel. More than 400,000 visitors attended the first follow-up IAA to the traditional Frankfurt Auto Show in Munich.
With the new concept, the VDA is bracing itself once morest the decline of motor shows worldwide: the Ami Leipzig was last in 2014, the Geneva Motor Show has not taken place for three years, the shows in Detroit and Paris are only shadows of their former size. Because the car manufacturers are no longer willing to spend double-digit million sums for trade fair appearances and are increasingly focusing on their own events.
In addition, the number of trade fair visitors has been falling for years. The IAA in Frankfurt recently had only half as many visitors (560,000) as at peak times. The VDA’s answer: if people no longer come to the trade fair, the trade fair will come to the people. In Munich, the car manufacturers are once once more exhibiting in freely accessible exhibition areas in the city centre. Brands such as Audi, Cupra, BMW, Ford, Mercedes Benz, Mini, Porsche, Renault and Volkswagen should be crowd pullers with their stands, as they were in 2021. Asian brands such as BYD, Hongi, Leapmotor and Vinfast have also booked space in the city to present their new products. Discussions with other car manufacturers regarding a possible participation are ongoing.
Unlike two years ago, the exhibition center in Munich-Riem is reserved for trade visitors. In addition to the established supplier and technology companies such as Bosch, Continental, Magna, Schaeffler and ZF, 100 start-ups will also present their ideas there. The topic of electromobility also takes up a lot of space here: specialists for drive batteries, charging technology and fuel cells are also exhibiting in the exhibition halls. This area, called the IAA Summit, is open from September 5th to 8th.
The exhibition center and the city center are connected by a “Blue Lane”, a special lane reserved for electric cars and vehicles with at least three people. The IAA Mobility will be opened for the first time by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In 2021 his predecessor Angela Merkel came. (cen/gr)
