IA: editorial charter of Roularta Media GroupIA: editorial charter of Roularta Media Group

Our commitments regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence within RMG newsrooms.

L’artificial intelligence, already used in our titles as an automation tool (machine learning, recommendations, targeting, etc.), has recently taken a new step with the advent of generative artificial intelligence (IAG) models. This is a major technological upheaval, both in terms of the scope of the sectors it will affect and the speed of its adoption by professionals and the general public.

This technological development offers many opportunities and raises many ethical questions, especially with regard to its use in journalism. It therefore seems necessary to us to define as precisely as possible the framework in which these technologies must or must not be used within the editorial offices of Roularta Media Group.

Faithful to the relationship of trust that binds us to our readers, we have chosen to publish these principles. We also encourage our readers to send us their questions and comments, which we will treat with the greatest attention. To do this, you can send an e-mail to the editor concerned.

All our editorial publications are synonymous with quality, reliable and relevant information. The continuity of this position is essential to guarantee the accuracy of the information and must remain our compass. It is the quality of the work of our journalists, their ability to find original angles, to decipher the news and to provide added editorial value that make the success of our brands.

Recognizing that the areas of application of AI will continue to expand and that its importance is bound to grow over time, we will update and clarify our position according to the ethical charters and practices applicable to the various publications of our band.

Our commitments cover two categories of AI use:

Use of text generators

We do not intend to publish editorial content generated in whole or in part by AI without editorial and human oversight. However, we reserve the right to do so for illustrative purposes (eg as part of a ChatGPT study). In this case, we will explicitly indicate the origin of the content. We also reserve the right to use AI tools for the purpose of synthesizing original articles produced by a journalist.

We also reserve the right to use AI as an enrichment, research or synthesis tool to help and fuel the work of journalists. Journalists can use these tools like a search engine, for example, but must always go back to their own sources to guarantee the origin of their information.

Use of sound, image or video generators

We do not intend to exclusively post AI-generated images or videos without editorial and human oversight. As with all editorial content, we want to protect ourselves once morest any risk of error or copyright infringement.

As for the voice AIit will only be used in the context of a journalistic article.

We will make an exception if AI-generated images are used to illustrate AI articles, or if the illustrator uses AI in their creative process. In all cases, we will ensure that the provenance is explicitly indicated to the reader.

However, as with texts, we can use AI as a tool to summarize videos, especially to facilitate their distribution on different platforms.
