Basic emojis that KakaoTalk has withdrawn from service termination (KakaoTalk capture)
Kakao has reversed its decision to terminate the basic emoji (picture language) service that was provided free of charge on the online messenger KakaoTalk. The decision was withdrawn following negative reactions continued following the recent announcement of the end of the service.
Kakao announced on the 2nd that it will return KakaoTalk to the previous version in response to users’ requests. A Kakao official said, “Reflecting user feedback, we have decided to roll back (restore) to the existing version,” adding, “The restoration is scheduled to take effect within next week.”
Kakao has been providing free emojis using facial expressions and gestures since 2011. However, on the 30th of last month, he announced the end of free emoji support, reducing the number of free emojis from 116 to 34, and decided to sequentially terminate the remaining emojis. This restoration decision will bring back 82 deleted emojis.
KakaoTalk’s free emojis have been used for over 10 years and have become a way for users to easily express their emotions. In particular, emojis using popular Kakao Friends characters such as Frodo, Apeach, and Muji were very popular. When the decision was made to end the free emoji service, reactions poured in from KakaoTalk users, saying, “It’s a shame that a useful service has disappeared.”
