Microsoft recently made the news by finalizing the acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, but not only that. The firm has also partnered with InWorld AI, which offers generative tools for screenwriters to help them create stories and dialogue. An announcement which caused some commotion.
Ubisoft, Take-Two, Microsoft… AI in the crosshairs
Artificial intelligence has been part of our lives for a long time, but it has experienced a big boom recently with the release of publicly accessible generative tools. If the technique fascinates, it also greatly worries authors of all kinds, who fear seeing their work reused or seeing their livelihood disappear. It is partly this fear that led to the strike of screenwriters and actors in Hollywood, which recently ended with an agreement reached between the actors’ union and the production companies.
Generative AI also finds his path to video gamesand in particular at Ubisoft, which announced in March that the studios were going to experiment using Ghostwriter to make writing easierand in particular the short lines of dialogue dropped by the NPCs as the players pass by. Strauss Zelnick, PDG de Take-Twoadded his stone to the building by indicating that NPCs generated by AI can be “really fun“. On the Microsoft side, we have invested massively in ChatGPT, and we have recently gone a little further through signing a partnership with InWorld AI. As for Ubisoft, the idea and to use it to helping studios create stories and dialogue :
Together, we aim to provide an accessible and responsibly designed cross-platform AI toolset to help and empower creators in designing dialogue, stories, and quests. This toolset will include:
An AI design co-pilot that helps game designers explore more creative ideas, turning messages into detailed scripts, dialogue trees, quests, and more. An AI character execution engine that can be integrated into the game client, enabling entirely new narratives with dynamically generated stories, quests and dialogue for players to experience.
Generative AI: some developers are speaking out once morest the use of these new tools
Obviously, the announcement made some players jump. Microsoft tried to reassure everyone, indicating that it was propose additional tools, and not replace the authors. A common discourse, and it will take time and a little perspective to see how the technology will be used. But some developers don’t want to hear regarding generative AI, especially in a context where more than 6,000 video game workers have lost their jobs these last months. This is particularly the case of Alanah Pierce, streamer and screenwriter at Sony Santa Monica (God of War: Ragnarok).
Imagine announcing this in a year where the games industry has laid off 6,000+ people. I will never play any game that InWorld has any part in making. https://t.co/uwu85vrGgL

Imagine announcing this during a year where the video game industry laid off more than 6,000 people. I will never play any game that InWorld has a hand in creating.
Many developers share this vision, even if AI is one of the priority investment areas for many publishers. Sony Intertainement Interactive notably acquired iSIZE, a company expert in audio and video optimization by AI. However, some people think thatwell integrated, AI might relieve teams of certain repetitive tasks, leaving more room for other things. They thus evoke the potential reduction of crunch phases and the creation of jobs, the work of the AI having to be controlled. At any rate, the presence of generative AI in video games is still in its infancyand a lot of things will still happen before it establishes itself (or not) as a lasting creation tool.
