“I will not be a continuation of Biden” –

It was supposed to be an interview and instead it was a fiery debate. Kamala Harris had taken this into account when she ventured into enemy territory on Wednesday evening, lending herself to the microphones of Fox News in an attempt to reach anti-Trump conservatives. Host Bret Baier quickly pressed her on the Biden administration‘s record on immigration, an issue of primary importance to many Republican voters. “We have long had a corrupt immigration system, which transcends, among other things, the former Trump administration,” the presidential candidate responded. Baier asked her if she would apologize to the families of women killed by illegal immigrants, and to pin her down he played dirty by showing a clip of a furious mother whose 12-year-old daughter was killed by two Venezuelans. Harris called these crimes “tragic” and reiterated that she in no way supports the decriminalization of illegal immigration: “I don’t believe in the decriminalization of border crossings. I didn’t do it as vice president. I won’t do it as president.” The interview, a calculated risk for Harris, gave her a chance to rephrase a recent comment she made on ABC’s The View, in which she said she couldn’t find anything she would have done differently than Biden. A real misstep even according to several Democratic strategists. «Let me be very clear: my presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s and, like every new president who takes office, I will bring my life experiences, my professional experiences and fresh, new ideas. I represent a new generation of leaders.”

Addressing the Fox audience also allowed her to cite Trump’s recent threats against critics and detractors. “This is a democracy,” the vice president said. “And in a democracy, the president of the United States should be willing to handle criticism without threatening to bring in the military against the people who made it.” Harris is betting everything on this position of democratic openness. In fact, a few hours before the interview, she appeared at an event entitled “Country Over Party” in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, accompanied by over 100 Republican leaders, including former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman, the former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan and former members of Congress. Kamala said in Bucks that Trump is not worthy of the support of Republicans who care about democracy. “If you share this opinion, no matter your party, no matter who you voted for last time, there is a place for you in this campaign,” he said proudly. «In the coalition we have built there is room for anyone who is ready to turn the page on the chaos and instability of Donald Trump. I promise you to be a president for all Americans.” The tycoon, as a GOP presidential candidate, is expected to win Republican votes by large margins in every state. But if Harris can redevelop herself, even just a little, in swing states like Pennsylvania or Arizona, she could have victory in her grasp.
