This is a novelty since January 1: the technical control is compulsory for motorcycles when reselling to a private individual or following an accident. A change for the owners but also for the technical control inspectors.
This is the first time that Grégory, a motorbike enthusiast, has to pass the technical inspection of the vehicle he has just bought. “I bought it on December 30 and when I wanted to give the information to register it as we did before, I was told ‘No, the technical control is compulsory'”he describes at the microphone of RTL INFO.
50 minutes of checks
Currently, 5 out of 25 stations in Wallonia and Brussels are equipped to accommodate two-wheelers. Tire, exhaust, headlights, the checks last regarding 20 minutes at a cost of around fifty euros.
Didier Marcours is an inspector and obviously a biker. He explains that he has to check “everything related to frame welding, braking, play in the barrels, play in the steering…”.
In Belgium, the number of bikers has increased by 70% in 10 years. And this technical inspection is aimed at resold or damaged vehicles. Philippe Nellissen is deputy technical director of the Autosecurity group. He explains that, already from “on the first day, there was a station where we did 5 checks, and out of the 5 there were 4 red cards…”. A novelty necessary for the safety of all. 15,000 motorcycles should be inspected in this way each year.
