“I want to be up to it”

Five days following burning the boards of Madison Square Garden alongside Dua Lipa, Angèle arrives on Sunday at Star Academy. “I mightn’t wait to come back to Montreal,” says the Belgian singer.

The photos and videos have spread like wildfire on the web this week: Angèle, all dressed in white, who arrives on the stage of Madison Square Garden, in New York, to join Dua Lipa there. The two singers sang there Fevertheir recent collaboration, in front of an audience as noisy as it is enthusiastic.

The experience, she attests, was “unreal”.

” That was too cool. And honestly, I wasn’t really stressed; I was just going to join a friend to have a good time on stage. I was doing just one song, there wasn’t really a stake. But Star Académie is quite different. I want to be up to it for these young singers, and for the Quebec public, ”advances Angèle in an interview with the Journal from MELS studios in Montreal.

The “strength” of academicians

At the time of writing these lines, the young singer had not yet met the academicians with whom she will share the stage on Sunday evening for a number retracing her musical journey from the five
last years.

But even before getting to know them, Angèle was already emphasizing their “strength”. Because by her own admission, she herself would struggle to handle the pressure that comes with an adventure like Star Academy.

“To be honest, I have a lot of difficulty with the stress of television and live. I think I would have experienced that very badly. You really have to be very strong and super brave to participate in a competition like this. It’s really impressive, ”she says.

Reconnect with Quebec

If she accepted the invitation of Star Academyit is first and foremost to reconnect with the Quebec public that she had not seen since her performance at the Bell Center in December 2019. The pandemic – and the preparation of her most recent album, Ninety-Fivehas since kept her out of North America as a whole.

“I had some extraordinary times in Montreal, both at Club Soda, at the MTelus and at the Bell Centre. So I was afraid of not being able to come back to Montreal. Until a few months ago, I was still asking myself questions regarding whether I was going to be able to do a real tour once more. Being here this weekend already means a lot. It gives good vibes for the future, ”she says.

This sequel, she will also start planning it this week. Expected in Europe tomorrow, she will begin the first rehearsals there for the tour accompanying her latest album. A new show that she intends to be more mature, the result of Angèle’s evolution over the past two years.

“I learned a lot from my first tour. I had time to perfect myself as performer, artist, dancer and singer. I’m very excited to take people with me to the rollercoaster of the new album,” she says.

If no show date is yet scheduled for Quebec, fans of Angèle can be reassured. Because, even before leaving Montreal, he is already looking forward to returning. “It’s 100% sure that I’ll be back soon! she promises.

Star Academy will be broadcast at 7 p.m., Sunday evening, on TVA.
