Dalia Gutman comes to Córdoba with her show I have things to doin which he talks regarding enjoyment, the perfect but impossible life standards, guilt, self-esteem, the relationship with his body, his contradictions, the bond with his mother and daughter, sex, and that endless list of things you want to do in the midst of your fast-paced life.
And you don’t have to ask her where she got her inspiration from, just try to call her on the phone to make the note. Super-disposed, Dalia answers from the elevator while she tries to get to her house following a hectic day and before going to pick up her children from school. In that short span of time she chatted with VOS regarding humor and his artistic present.
“While I make this note, I also think regarding this madness that I am now doing 20 things while I am talking to you. I think there are certain people who are very chaotic, this thing regarding finding themselves with a backpack, four bags… it happens to me all the time when I find myself in that situation and I say: ‘But why am I doing all this, all together!’”, she says. her at the beginning of this talk regarding her show.
How did you come up with that name?
I did nine years mine thing and it was a very mine phrase to say “I have things to do, I’ll call you later, then we’ll talk”, and suddenly it became a phrase for everyone, not just for women. We are in a moment in which if one does not take care of oneself, it is a total delirium. The idea of the show is also to have a little laugh at the crazy way we are living. The phrase remained as a sequel to that first show, but this one is different. That was more than stand up and this one has other seasonings. It has more lights and a more theatrical, more visual proposal.
–How would you define it?
–It’s a pretty crazy show, sometimes it’s hard for me to put it into words. I like that it has something very particular, which is that it was unlike any other show out there. And it’s not enlarged, it’s real. It is very delirious and has a lot of the director, who is Mariela Asensio. There are times when people wonder: “Is this part of the work or is it happening here today?” The work is mixed a lot with things that are happening to me on stage, calls that come to me… this is the half-accelerated life that we are living and that is seen on stage.
– With your partner (Sebastián Wainraich) do you take this family chaos with humor or, like any human being, do you also have downturns or tense moments?
–I am very tense, much more than Seba, and everything worries me. But over the years I am learning more and more to laugh at myself. In my family we laugh, we have a good time, but followingwards it is very difficult to run a house, have two children, try to raise them as well as possible. So, there is humor, but you also have to be very at the foot of the canyon. There are moments that are fun and others that are absolute tension.
–Several years ago, when you came with the other show, we talked regarding the prevailing political correctness. Do you notice any progress? Today it seems that everything went accommodating
–I think that in 2017 everything was in full swing. Luckily, there was a very big evolution from then until now. There are a lot of things that have already become naturalized today. Suddenly, sometimes they ask me this regarding being a female humorist and I think that now no one would dare to tell a female humorist that it doesn’t look good to talk regarding this or that. But when I started doing humor, in 2005, it happened to me all the time. I feel like things have settled. I like, at least the humor that I do, to laugh a lot at my contradictions. So, since I laugh at myself, no one can tell me what to say or what I feel in relation to my emotional instability or my body. I think it’s important to try to be honest. Later, if someone is offended, they are offended, but at least I try to have honest humor.
What things or situations make you laugh the most?
-I am very amused by the person who is not afraid of ridicule, who is exposed and does not care what they say. I always find that fascinating, inspiring. And well, when I’m in a good mood, everything makes me laugh; and when I’m in a bad mood… it’s more complicated.
–And how do you get along with ridicule?
–And… everything happens to me, what do I know. There are days when I am lighter. I became a little friendly. It seems to me that I dedicated myself to comedy because it is in my DNA. I mean, being ridiculous has a thousand things, but you saw when you’re used to falling down, to your pants tearing… there’s a moment when you say: “Crazy, that’s it, I’m like that.” ! I try not to resist. When I realized that I didn’t have to resist anymore, I was relieved. I think what humor does to people is soothe them. And me, who is always worried and tense, it’s like the ideal place. But obviously, sometimes I feel ridiculous, sometimes I worry regarding what they will say. We all care what they say. Sometimes it happens to me that I upload a video on the networks and there is a good vibe, but someone says: “Oh, how ridiculous!”; and I’m like, “Obviously I’m ridiculous!”
–The humorous micro-stories are taking over the networks and they work very well, they go viral. You use them to promote your shows… how do you get along with the networks?
–Today everyone in the bus, in the supermarket, is watching the networks, even while watching TV. It seems to me that today it is the means of communication that must be taken advantage of. I try not to fight with that and understand that, if I want to communicate something or have an idea, it’s also great to have a channel because before, the world of entertainment and comedy was another world. It seems quite democratic to me that networks exist. Also, I love seeing everything, I try to discover the new breeds and find out what other comedians are doing. Obviously I’m left out because I’m not stupid, but some things come to me because of my children. I like it and it inspires me a bit. I am quite diverse and I like to know everything that is circulating in comedy.
