Hate and harassment are commonplace on social media, says professional tennis player Caroline Garcia, 30e Racket in the WTA rankings, decided to raise awareness of this topic among Internet users.
“You should consider suicide,” “You are a piece of shit,” and even “I hope your mother dies soon,” are among the messages the French woman often receives after a failure, as one of her posts on the X platform As revealed in a publication (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

“There are hundreds of [de messages semblables]. Now 30, it still hurts though because at the end of the day I’m just a regular girl who works really hard and does her best, I have the tools and I do some work to protect myself from this kind of hate. But this is still unacceptable,” she wrote.
Garcia particularly wanted to point out the impact this conversation has on young players.
“When I think about the young players that have to go through this, it really worries me,” Garcia continued. People who are not fully developed as humans are really affected by this kind of hatred. Maybe you think it won’t hurt us. But it is. We are human beings.
The 5-foot-10 athlete also lamented partnerships between sports and sportsbooks that “attract new people into unhealthy betting.”
“We are here to promote bookmakers who are actively ruining people’s lives,” she said. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying they should be banned because people are free to do whatever they want with their money. But maybe we shouldn’t promote them.
“Besides, if someone decided to say these things to me in public, they could get into legal trouble. So why are we free to do anything online? Shouldn’t we rethink online anonymity?
As a reminder, Garcia competed in the U.S. Open, where she lost to Renata Sarasua in the first round on Tuesday.
