“I hope whoever did this can’t look himself in the face anymore”

“He had a lot of blood on him, he was suffocating in the trash can”

Thursday evening, two friends discovered an abandoned puppy in a shipping container. Locked in a poop bag, the little one still had the umbilical cord attached to him.

The little Staffordshire bull terrier was taken Thursday evening to the EVC veterinary emergency center in Etoy. On Friday, he was already better.

As he was throwing his garbage bag into a container in his neighborhood on Thursday evening, a Prilléran (VD) heard a squeak. In a bag of droppings, closed by a very tight knot, he and his friend Selim discovered with amazement a male baby of the Staffie breed, the umbilical cord still attached to him.

“He had a lot of blood on him. He was suffocating,” says Selim, in his twenties. Distraught, the two friends called 117. But urgent interventions have priority (see box). “We therefore contacted several veterinary offices who did not seem alarmed by the situation, relates the young man. At the EVC veterinary emergency center in Etoy, a more human voice explained to us how to take care of him before bringing him there. Wrapped in a blanket, the little one was taken there without further delay.

A case followed by the Canton

Contacted Monday, the director of the center, Dr. Anais Borias, indicates that the puppy is doing well. But she cannot say more, because “a follow-up is in progress by the Direction of the veterinary services of the canton”. A classic measure.

Selim says he and his friend searched the other trash cans in the area Thursday night to make sure there were no other dogs in distress. “The center told us that the puppy had to be taken out of its mother’s womb by caesarean section…”, he adds. Before striking: “I hope that the person who abandoned him will read this article and that he will no longer be able to look at himself in the mirror.” The perpetrators risk, as a rule, a suspended financial sentence and a fine of up to several hundred francs.

If urgent cases have priority, the Vaudois police nevertheless advise to notify them in the event of abandonment or loss of animals. “We must intervene, even in a second phase, and do research for a possible report. On the other hand, there is no certainty that the investigation will succeed,” said its spokeswoman Florence Frei. In this specific case, the staffie not being chipped, it is almost impossible to find the person responsible. “It’s unfortunate but without elements, we can’t get anywhere,” she regrets.
