The “Expendables” films have stood as a testament to old-school action cinema for over a decade, drawing in audiences with their over-the-top action sequences and star-studded casts. Alex Reynolds, a renowned action film enthusiast and blogger, joins us today to discuss the franchise’s enduring legacy and what makes it so captivating.
Alex, what’s your take on the impact of “The Expendables” on the modern action genre?
“The expendables” definitely stirred the action movie pot when it frist arrived. It brought back that classic, buddy-cop action feel that many missed in the CGI-heavy action films of the early 2000s. It tapped into a nostalgia for those 80s action movies we all grew up with. Sylvester Stallone knew how to assemble a team of action legends, and that instantly gave the film a unique and iconic feel,”
What do you think has contributed to the franchise’s continued success, despite mixed reviews for some installments?
“Fans of this franchise aren’t necessarily looking for Oscar-worthy narratives. They want explosive action, clever shout-outs to old action movies, and they want to see these seasoned stars throw punches and deliver memorable lines. The franchise has delivered on that consistently, even when they’ve strayed a little from the formula. It’s that simple satisfaction that keeps people coming back.”
The Expendables franchise tries to walk a fine line between new and old. do you think it has successfully captured that balance?
“It’s a tricky balance, and honestly, I think they’ve hit it pretty well. They refresh the team with newer talent, like Jason Statham and dolph lundgren, who fit in perfectly alongside the veterans. and while the films are undeniably nostalgic, they also update action sequences and don’t shy away from injecting a bit of humor which keeps things fresh.”
The franchise has often been criticized for being overly testosterone-driven. How do you see its appeal transcending gender?
“That’s a valid point, and I think the challenge for future installments is to further explore diverse characters and stories within the action genre. But, at its core, The Expendables appeal is universal: The desire to see good triumph over evil, the thrill of skilled combat, and the camaraderie of a team facing unachievable odds. These are themes that resonate with people nonetheless of gender.”
What’s next for The Expendables franchise? Any predictions?
“The sparks flew with “Expend4bles,” so I’d love to see them explore a deeper dive into some of the characters. Give us backstories, more complex motivations—things that make them more than just muscle. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them exploring spin-offs focused on individual characters, perhaps exploring their origins or adventures outside of the main team. The possibilities are endless!”
