Participating in a meeting with the Minister of Solidarity and Families, the President of the Departmental Council recalled the specificity of the accelerated aging of the Reunion population. This requires financial resources from the Department on a completely different scale than in France. The risk is for the community to no longer be able to meet the needs of elderly people with disabilities.
“In my capacity as President of the Department designated by the Association of Departments of France, I participated in the funders’ committee organized by Minister Aurore Bergé (Minister of Solidarity and Families) in the presence of Fadila Khattabi (Delegate Minister in charge of People with Disabilities).
This was for me the opportunity to recall, in video, the very particular situation of Reunion Island and to defend the need to consider that the aging of the population will have a strong impact on our financial means, not allowing us to meet the needs of our elderly and disabled people.
The ministers have shown themselves to be attentive to our situation.
This committee is a useful body for addressing Departmental funding issues. Minister Aurore Bergé confirmed support for the Departments from 2024.
I continue to defend our specificity and our ambitions, and to work in the interest of the people of Reunion. »
