“I can’t admire Jean-Luc Godard, I can’t admire someone who hates Jews so much.” Guest of Anne-Élisabeth Lemoine on the program C à vous (France 5) this Wednesday, September 14, actor Gérard Darmon heavily loaded Jean-Luc Godard, emblematic director of the New Wave who died on Tuesday September 13.

“I can’t admire Jean-Luc Godard, I can’t admire someone who hates Jews so much. Just as I will never read Céline or marvel at Hitler’s paintings.”

“You wanted to say a word regarding Jean-Luc Godard, Gérard Darmon?” asks Anne-Élisabeth Lemoine first. “Not especially […] the man he was was not very benevolent for my community”, answers the actor, son of Algerian Sephardic Jews.

“Rest in his soul, but he’s not someone I like”

“I find that the remarks he made were absolutely inadmissible. It was anti-Semitism, it was Holocaust denial, it was revisionism”, hammered the actor, confessing to having been “more touched by the disappearance of Queen Elizabeth”. “I can’t admire Jean-Luc Godard, I can’t admire someone who hates Jews so much,” he continued. “Rest in his soul, but he’s not someone I appreciate, that I love.”

Jean-Luc Godard, long committed to the Palestinian cause, has sometimes been accused of anti-Semitism. With his last partner Anne-Marie Miéville, he notably made “Ici et Ailleurs”, a film in which he compared the Jews to the Nazis, which caused a scandal at the time.
