As part of our annual year-end shopping project, we asked photographers and writers to introduce one item they purchased in 2023. (Editorial department)

Continuous shooting performance and high AF performance that make you want to give up your high-resolution model

Regular! This year’s “I bought this!” in Sonehara’s case is Fujifilm’s “X-H2S.” By the way, last year it was also Fujifilm’s “X-H2”. Both machines are brother machines that have almost the same features other than the image sensor, but the “X-H2S” is a high-speed continuous shooting model with a stacked sensor and shoots at approximately 40 frames per second, and the “X-H2” is an amazing APS-C model. It is a high resolution model with over 40 million pixels.

This may sound like an extravagant story, as if we had bought an additional “X-H2S” to our “X-H2”, but of course that is not the case. The truth is that I traded in my “X-H2” and finally bought the “X-H2S”.

Why did you change to “X-H2S”? Why did you let go of the wonderful high image quality of “X-H2S”? That’s what it means. This is because while trying out various stacked sensor equipped machines that have appeared in the last few years, I slowly but steadily became fascinated by their high continuous shooting performance and AF performance. In other words, my curiosity was intensely stimulated. A full-size machine equipped with a stacked sensor would be quite expensive, but the key point was that the APS-C model alleviated the financial impact to some extent.

Of course, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t regret giving up the X-H2’s exceptional resolution. However, within the normal shooting range, whether it’s for hobby photography or work photography, the resolution of approximately 26 million pixels is sufficient, and in a sense, it is truly versatile for me. I am very satisfied with it. So, I thought I needed a modern super telephoto lens for dynamic photography, so I was thinking positively about purchasing the “XF150-600mmF5.6-8 R LM OIS WR” even though I was still worried about it, and when it was announced in November, This is an example of a sudden price increase. This really made me go “Wow!”

The excellent continuous shooting and AF performance of the X-H2S, which is equipped with a stacked sensor, has inspired me to try photography, which I had previously given up on because it was a different genre. No regrets about buying a new one! (actually there are a few)
Fujifilm X-H2S / XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R LM OIS WR (using XF1.4X TC WR) / 420mm (equivalent to 630mm) / Shutter speed priority AE (1/500 seconds, F8.0, -0.3EV) / ISO 400

Current situation report

I spend my days worrying about wanting a genuine super telephoto zoom “XF150-600mmF5.6-8 R LM OIS WR”. I also want to resume the overseas photography trips that I haven’t been able to do since the coronavirus pandemic.
