Eduardo Cerna, new director of the Investigative Police (PDI), asked for “apologies to the citizens, detectives and authorities” following what happened with his predecessor, Sergio Muñoz, who is detained following multiple leaks to lawyer Luis Hermosilla were revealed.
According to what was stated by the police authority following visiting La Moneda and meeting with the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, and the undersecretary of the area, Manuel Monsalve, “I assume this position with humility and commitment to continue working to leave the capabilities in “to attack head-on the crime that affects Chileans.”
“We will work with the greatest care and diligence to demonstrate that the institution is above the people,” he added.
However, Cerna wanted to “take advantage of the opportunity” to apologize following the scandal involving Sergio Muñoz and the consequences in the PDI.
“I take this opportunity to apologize to the citizens, detectives and authorities for the situation. They are individual behaviors, but they have no place, we have not accepted them and we will not accept them,” she stressed.
Likewise, he expressed that “we will continue to demonstrate that we can and must continue fighting for a safer Chile.”
Although he said that he cannot refer to the investigation once morest Muñoz, as it is in progress, he did commit to implementing mechanisms so that such instances do not “happen once more.”
“We will articulate mechanisms and policies so that they never occur once more and that strict adherence to ethical commitments is highlighted. Behaviors like this diminish the gaze, but we will work hard to prevent them from happening once more,” she stated.
