Among the guests of the episode of Very true on Saturday 5 October 2024 there is also Giampaolo Morelli. The Neapolitan actor and director arrives in the living room of Silvia Toffanin to talk about his new upcoming film, but the interview then touches on a very personal theme. A shocking truth revealed to him by his mother on the verge of death, just a year and a half ago, which led him to rethink his entire life.
Giampaolo Morelli at Verissimo, the shocking discovery about his biological father
“My mother was ill, she only had a few days left to live, even though I obviously didn’t know it,” says the actor. “At a certain point he tells me that he had written to me a letter long before, and tells me where to find it. I look for it, I read it and I discover that in that letter there was a confession: the one I thought was my dad wasn’t actually my real dad“. His reaction? He tells it like this: “It’s news that, even if it comes late in life, is devastating.” But then he adds: “It’s not that I expected it, but I’ve put together many pieces of my previous life: I didn’t come from a Mulino Bianco family, mine was a complicated family.”
“Then, after reading the letter what happened, were you able to ask your mother any more questions?” Silvia Toffanin asks, and Morelli replies: “Yes, I had time to ask for explanations, some were given to me. My mother revealed the name of this gentleman to me, and I discovered that my real father was my godfather at confirmation , now dead for years.”
The actor, despite the difficulty in accepting such a truth, says he appreciated that last gesture from his mother. “I understood that with this gesture she wanted to give me something, some might think that it was just to clear her conscience, but instead it was a gesture for which I thank her, because it is always better to know. At that point I was able to review things about my existence, to for example the little affection of those who perhaps suspected (what the father believed ed.) When you discover the truth you understand many things, many files open, for example I remember my mother’s insistence on having me confirmed when I was now 19 years old. , and many other things.”
The natural father was already dead, but his father was able to deal with what he believed all his life: “I did it, but with great tact. I spoke to my father, but I really want to protect him. Certainly there are responsibilities on all sides, yet I can’t hold it against anyone. I don’t even hold it against my biological father, despite the fact that he never made a gesture towards me, despite never having had a family or children. I think that everyone has reasons to act as they do, we all happen to do harm, and often out of fragility.”
