I am clean and I will fight 2024-03-20 03:03:10

“I know what I’ve done, I know who I am. I challenge to know if other athletes in the world have passed the checks that I have passed and the surprise checks and that for so many years I have been with a biological passport… I have not been out of the lists any year, I have been since I started cycling continuously every year” he said initially Christos Volikakis.

“At first when I got this email, I said: eight years back now to be involved? To laugh; What to do; I know what I got, if I got it and what I didn’t get. I am always clean and I have nothing to prove to anyone. I was waiting for a phone call from some specific people who said they were with me” added Christos Volikakis.

Christos Volikakis: Tested positive for a banned substance eight years after the Rio Olympics

THE Christos Volikakis tested positive for a banned substance according to the International Cycling Union (UCI), eight years after the Olympic Games held in Rio, Brazil.

According to a UCI announcement, the Greek rider Volikakis has been informed of an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) for selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) of the metabolite LGD-4033 (1) by the International Testing Agency (ITA) on behalf of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Also, pending the outcome of the ITA proceedings and in accordance with the UCI ADR, the rider has been placed on temporary availability.

Based on a relevant Union announcement, this AAF results from the re-analysis of a sample collected on August 16, 2016 during the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.

This retest was carried out as part of the ITA-led retest program on behalf of the IOC, which focuses on samples collected during the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. These retests are an integral part of the comprehensive anti-doping program that conducted independently by the ITA on behalf of the IOC since 2018. They enhance anti-doping efforts by acting as an additional anti-doping deterrent and by expanding the range of potential rule violations identified beyond the initial sample analysis. The reanalysis program allows further checks to be carried out based on updated information, in particular thanks to research, or when detection methods evolve as a result of advances in scientific technology.

Under the World Anti-Doping Code, samples can be stored for 10 years after collection (which was extended from eight years to 10 years after the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics), maintaining the same legal consequence in the event of a reanalysis.

The rider has the right to request the analysis of his B sample.

Under the current rules (the IOC Anti-Doping Rules – ADR – and the UCI Anti-Doping Regulations – ADR), once the ITA has determined the consequences of AAF under the IOC ADR, the matter will be referred to the UCI to determine the possible sanctions that could be imposed beyond the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics under the UCI ADR.
