Hyunjin Ryu’s agency, Boras Corporation, congratulated Hyunjin Ryu on his 10th anniversary of major league service time through official Instagram on the 27th (Korean time).
Service time is an indicator of how long a player has played in the major leagues. From the start of the season to the end of the regular season, including rest days, each day on the big league roster or the injured list is added by one day.
If you complete 172 days, you will be recognized as having completed one year. Ryu Hyun-jin, who has been 10 years since his debut in the big league in 2022, completed his 172th day this season and officially recorded 10 years of service time.
Ryu Hyun-jin is the third Korean player to fill 10 years of service time following Park Chan-ho and Choo Shin-soo.
Completing 10 years of service time in the Major Leagues is recognized as a great achievement. This is because it means that they have survived for a long time in the big leagues where fierce competition continues.
Ryu Hyun-jin spent a considerable amount of time on the injured list due to an injury, but when he was healthy, he shone brighter than anyone else. In his 175 major league games, he averaged a 75-45 record with a 3.27 ERA.
In 2019, he ranked first in the league in ERA with a 2.32 ERA. That year, he was an All-Star and finished second in the Cy Video poll.
After 10 years of service time, the welfare benefits also change. According to ‘USA Today’, if you receive a pension at age 45, it starts at a minimum of $68,000 per year until you die, and if you wait until age 62, it starts at $220,000 per year.
Meanwhile, Hyunjin Ryu, who is rehabilitating following Tommy John surgery, is continuing his rehabilitation in Toronto, the hometown of his team, the Toronto Blue Jays. After visiting Korea following the season is over, he is scheduled to move to Florida, where the club training site is located, to start his catch-ball in December.
