Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in the US by South Korean automaker Hyundai have surpassed 100,000 units since its EV product was first introduced in the world’s largest economy eight years ago.

According to auto industry data, the three Hyundai car brands, Hyundai, Genesis and Kia, have sold a total of 104,326 electric vehicles in the US market as of the end of January this year. Hyundai joins for the first time electric vehicle market America in October 2014 with the launch of the Kia Soul EV.

Hyundai has sold 51,096 units since 2017 and has shipped 1,964 premium Genesis EVs since its US launch last year. Meanwhile, Kia has sold 51,266 electric vehicles since 2014.

In 2017, Hyundai introduced IONIQ EVs, but its total annual EV sales ranged between 1,000-2,000 units until 2018.

With the introduction of electric sport utility vehicles (SUVs), including Kia’s Niro and Hyundai Kona EV, sales increased to 7,772 units in 2019 and 19,590 units in 2021.

In 2022, that number nearly tripled, to 58,028 units from the previous year, thanks to the popularity of the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60 models.

In a recent earnings report, Hyundai said it aims to sell 73,000 electric vehicles in the US this year. Kia aims to sell 58,000 electric vehicles in 2023.
