[월간수소경제 박상우 기자] Hyundai Motor Company produces clean hydrogen using biogas obtained from sewage treatment plant waste, taking the lead in reducing carbon and activating the hydrogen ecosystem.

On the 24th, Hyundai Motor Company held a business agreement ceremony to build a clean hydrogen production facility using biogas and vitalize the hydrogen ecosystem at Cheongju City Hall in Chungcheongbuk-do, attended by key officials such as Ganghyeon Seo, head of planning and finance division at Hyundai Motor Company, Beomseok Lee, mayor of Cheongju, and Jingyun Kim, head of the Institute for Advanced Technology. It was announced on the 25th.

This agreement was made on the occasion of the final selection of the Hyundai Motor Company-Advanced Research Institute consortium as a private operator in the biogas-using clean hydrogen production facility construction project hosted by the Ministry of Environment in March.

The Ministry of Environment decided to build five clean hydrogen production facilities using biogas from this year to 2026 according to the ‘Bio/Water Energy Expansion Roadmap’ announced in June of last year.

Accordingly, in January, a public contest was held for local governments and private operators who wanted to add a clean hydrogen production facility to the biogasification facility being operated or installed, and Hyundai Motor Company was finally selected as the private operator.

According to the agreement, Hyundai Motor Company will first build a facility capable of producing 500 kg of clean hydrogen per day with biogas obtained from organic waste on the site of a public sewage treatment plant in Cheongju by 2024, and increase the production to 1,000 kg per day by 2027 through expansion. policy.

In addition, a hydrogen filling station will be installed nearby to supply clean hydrogen at a reasonable price to local residents preferentially compared to by-product hydrogen.

In particular, it is expected to create a synergy effect through cooperation with Cheongju City, Chungcheongbuk-do, which is working hard to promote the hydrogen business, and the Institute of Advanced Technology, which has experience in commercializing clean hydrogen using biogas for the first time in Korea.
