The Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s first electric model reviewed by its sports department N. This one has not done in technical half measures!

Announced for years, teased for months, the Ioniq 5 N is finally officially presented. For the baptism of its first 100% electric sports car, Hyundai chose the Festival of Speed in Goodwood (United Kingdom).

The data sheet is therefore known. As expected, there are two motors, one on each axle. The front one develops 166 kW (226 hp), the rear one develops 282 kW (383 hp). The maximum accumulation is 448 kW, or 609 hp. Even more with the Boost function, which allows you to have up to 478 kW, 650 hp for a short time! With this Boost function, you go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds! The maximum speed is 260 km/h. The vehicle receives an 84 kWh battery. But Hyundai does not yet give autonomy. We just know that in optimal conditions, a quick recharge can go from 10 to 80% charge in 18 minutes.

To enhance the sensations, the model is equipped with a noise generator. The N Active Sound + (10 speakers, including two on the outside) offers three sounds: one imitates the engine of the i30 N thermal, one is an electronic sound specific to the N connected and one imitates the fighter plane . In addition, the N e-shift simulates gear changes by controlling the engine torque and reproduces the jerks perceived during gear changes.

Hyundai engineers had to pay particular attention to cooling, especially for the battery. It also benefits from a pre-conditioning function, to bring the cells to their optimum temperature in terms of energy efficiency. The function incorporates two modes suitable for high-performance driving: in Drag mode, the optimum temperature is set to allow immediate exploitation of maximum power, while in Track mode, the battery temperature is set to its lowest level. so that the vehicle can complete a greater number of laps.

For its part, the N Race system will act on consumption, again in connection with sports use. The default Sprint mode allows the vehicle to deliver full power. The Endurance setting will maximize track range. To achieve this, it limits sudden power peaks, which slows the rise in temperature and improves the vehicle’s endurance capabilities.

For braking, the regenerative system, which uses the motors, provides the main braking force, while the hydraulic brakes provide additional braking force when needed. The model gets 400mm front and 360mm rear discs, with a new, lighter material.

The look has of course been revised to give the Ioniq 5 a more muscular look. At the front, the shield, partly painted black, receives enlarged air intakes. The blades which are born in the opening go up in front of the wheels. The bottom of the body is highlighted by an orange border, which continues on the side skirts. The rear bumper, also partly black, incorporates a diffuser. The new bumpers further increase the car, which now stretches over 4.71 meters. The tailgate is surmounted by a spoiler which encompasses the 3rd brake light in an original way.

Inside, driver and passenger are well seated in bucket seats incorporating the headrest. The seat has been lowered by 20 mm.

This first electric N will go on sale in the fall.
