Hyundai Ioniq 5 (58 kWh) : le roi ion

and bref

Electric crossover
From €46,500
Autonomies: 384 km

Crossover or compact sedan, difficult to precisely place the Ioniq 5 in a box as its design is divisive. Launched in 2020, the Korean model carried over almost identically the lines of the “45” concept car presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show a year earlier. The entry-level version billed at €46,500 does not overlook all the style elements that make this car so popular. Namely a compact profile, a neo-retro look, large diameter rims (19”) and “pixel” lights.

The Ioniq 5 takes over almost entirely the neo-retro look of the concept car. This 58 kWh version in “Intuitive” finish and billed at €46,500 is eligible for the super bonus.
The lights way
The “pixel” style lights are the trademark of the Korean.

On board, same thing. This “Intuitive” finish has nothing to envy to the competition at the same price and finish. Apart from the fabric upholstery, the layout remains identical to that of the more upscale versions. The driver faces an aerial dashboard overlooked by two large high-performance digital screens. This clean and bright environment is pleasant and still rare today on the electric market.

The passenger compartment is modern, refined, bright and functional. It is a car in which it is pleasant to travel.

Thought and designed as such, the Korean takes advantage of its electric car architecture to free up a maximum of space. Everything is well thought out and functional on board this car. All passengers (even tall ones) will appreciate the legroom and wide seat cushions. The many practical storage spaces are complemented by a well-sized trunk (525 litres) and an additional 24-litre compartment placed under the bonnet for storing charging cables. The Ioniq 5 will easily meet the needs of a family of 4.

The basic “Intuitive” version tested today is the most affordable in the catalog, priced at €46,500. There is still an inflation of nearly €3,000 compared to the launch in mid-2020, with an equivalent engine and finish. Despite this significant increase, the Ioniq 5 “small battery” can still claim the ecological bonus of €6,000 granted by the government until the end of 2022. The Ioniq 5 equipped with the 77KWh battery in propulsion is a good choice but it starts at €49,700. She is only entitled to the €2,000 bonus. The difference between the two models is, bonus deducted, at €7,200.

Average consumption of 16.9 kWh/100 km over an 800 km route

To animate this Ioniq 5 first prize, the manufacturer has chosen a simple configuration. A 58 kWh battery associated with a 170 hp motor which is responsible for driving the rear wheels. Despite the large mass which flirts with 2 tonnes (1,985 kg), the performance is decent with a 0 to 100 km/h under 9 seconds and energetic reminders. You will never have a power deficit at the wheel despite a maximum speed limited to 185 km/h. The maximum torque delivered from the start (350 Nm) offers lively starts in urban areas and the 3 driving modes offered (Eco, Normal and Sport) allow you to juggle according to the level of load and your environment.

Over nearly 800 km covered at the wheel of the Ioniq 5 (58kWh) on a route made up of 50% motorway, we observed an average consumption of 16.9 kWh/100 km, playing regularly with the efficient multi-level energy recovery system (with paddles on the steering wheel) . This very playful system even allows one-pedal driving. An excellent score in favorable climatic conditions. We advise you to opt for the heat pump (950 €) which optimizes the interior temperature while preserving the battery. On the highway at 130 km / h, the average consumption is more around 20 kWh / 100 km.

The particularity of the Ioniq 5 is its ability to accept high-power direct current fast charges.

We charged on an Ionity terminal with an average of 160 kW and peaks at 183 kW.

The autonomy promised according to the WLTP cycle is 384 km in mixed use. Difficult to envisage long journeys, however, the Korean has an advantage up its sleeve: its fast recharging. Indeed, even this access version is equipped with the 800 volt system capable of accepting a direct current (DC) load of up to 350 kW, better than a Porsche Taycan ! Enough to theoretically authorize a recharge from 0 to 80% in just 18 minutes. But to date, no fast terminal is able to deliver such power. However, the waiting time on an Ionity terminal (if the latter is functional) will rarely exceed 30 minutes as we observed during this test where the Korean easily held a load of 163 kW with peaks at 183 kW . In the end, long journeys are possible with a minimum of preparation.

For this, it is possible to subscribe to “ChargemyHyundai” which offers 3 charging offers included (excluding Ionity subscription of 13 €/month which grants preferential rates) according to your needs but also an intelligent route planner which will inform you on the available terminals, their power, etc.

However, we recommend the ABRP application (Carplay and Android compatible), the reference for calculating routes associated with a Chargemap card for more flexibility. Please note that in this case you will not benefit from preferential rates on Ionity terminals. If you have to drive long distances regularly, choose the 77 kWh battery and take out an Ionity subscription. In alternating current, the Ioniq 5 offers a charging power of up to 11 kW.

Test - Hyundai Ioniq 5 (58 kWh): the ion king

Despite its significant width (1.89 m) penalizing in town and in car parks, the Ioniq 5 is particularly pleasant to drive. The damping perfectly compensates for the excess weight and the large diameter rims to guarantee a very good level of comfort. This good traveler also enjoys good soundproofing at high speeds which makes motorway journeys pleasant. On the secondary road, the body takes almost no heel in support and faithfully follows the trajectories indicated.
