Hyundai introduces the Ioniq 6 with a $5,000 discount to entice Tesla Model Y and Model 3 buyers

Hyundai hasn’t benefited from US federal tax incentives for electric vehicles since the introduction of the Cut Inflation Act in April 2023, which has somewhat dampened the Korean brand’s electric vehicle portfolio. The IRA’s tax incentives have allowed manufacturers of electric vehicles that qualify to get a head start on competitors that do not qualify. Also, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 doesn’t seem to do the numbers that Hyundai thought it would, subselling its sister Ioniq 5 significantly at the start of 2023.

The US$5,000 rebate applies to Ioniq 6 SE and SEL vehicles purchased with cash in the United States, and brings the price of the standard SE range to US$36,600, while the SE version with the largest battery is offered at US$40,500, and the Ioniq 6 SEL starts at US$42,500. The SE Standard line has a range of 240 miles according to the EPA, while the SE RWD and AWD claim 361 miles and 316 miles respectively. The Ioniq 6 SEL, meanwhile, claims to go 305 miles in RWD trim and 270 miles in AWD trim.

Tesla’s closest competitorThe Ioniq 6’s closest competitor is the Tesla Model 3, which starts at $32,740 and offers a range of 272 miles, making the Ioniq 6 a tough sell even after cash rebates. If you think a Tesla isn’t for you, or if you don’t qualify for federal tax credits for other reasons, the Ioniq 6 manages to soften the blow a bit.

Cash rebate offers for the Hyundai Ioniq 6 only apply until July 5, 2023 for vehicles in stock and not for orders.
