Hyundai Heavy Industries develops eco-friendly ship sails… Industry’s first hi-rotor design approval

Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on the 28th that it had obtained design approval for the Hi-Rotor, which serves as the ‘sail’ of an eco-friendly ship, for the first time in the domestic shipbuilding industry.

According to Hyundai Heavy Industries, the original model ‘Hi-Rotor’ of the rotor sail, a wind power auxiliary propulsion device for ships, recently obtained design approval from Korea Register of Shipping (KR). A rotor sail is a cylindrical structure installed on the deck of a ship. By generating additional propulsion using wind, it serves as a sail that can reduce fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions.

The Hi-Rotor independently developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries obtained basic certification from the Korean Register of Shipping in December 2020 and also received design approval this time. Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to actively win orders for products following demonstrating it from the second half of this year.
