SEOUL, 11 Dec. (Yonhap) — Hyundai Motor Co. and its subsidiary Kia Corp. have each seen their electric vehicle (EV) sales top the 200,000 unit mark in Europe, data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) showed.
Since entering the European EV market in 2019, Kia has sold a total of 200,984 vehicles through the end of October. Its Niro electric SUV sold 121,852 copies ahead of the electric version of the Soul crossover (46,791) and the EV6 (32,341).
In particular, the EV6, Kia’s second all-electric vehicle launched in September last year, accounted for 39% of the European EV market and was voted Europe’s 2022 Car of the Year last February.
Hyundai Motor, for its part, saw its EV sales reach 237,631 units at the end of October, following having exceeded the threshold of 200,000 last April. The Kona took in 145,114 units followed by the Ioniq EV (49,241) and the Ioniq 5 (43,246). Its latest all-electric model Ioniq 6 is also enjoying great success, with stock available for pre-orders running out in five countries including Germany, UK, France, Norway and the Netherlands. .
Hyundai and Kia will likely see record EV sales this year. Their combined EV sales rose 13.6 percent year-on-year to 119,153 units in the first 10 months of this year, following rising to 135,408 units for all of last year.
