It’s a complicated weekend for several developers who saw their production canceled by SEGA after the Japanese company announced a restructuring aimed at limiting a drop in profitability in Europe. Among the victims is Hyenas with potentially difficult consequences for its creator Creative Assembly.
The choice of SEGA risks leaving traces
However, its future seemed promising since SEGA considered this multiplayer FPS as a “super game”, it was even planned to offer the title on many platforms. Unfortunately, the loss of profits on European territory has happened, thereby transforming Hyenas into real collateral damage that Creative Assembly will try to contain as best it can.
The next few weeks look to be quite foggy for all the studio’s employees, several of them could be laid off in the medium term if we are to believe the press release published on Creative Assembly’s X/Twitter account.
We have taken the incredibly difficult decision to begin a consultation process on redundancies in certain areas of our UK business, while at the same time winding down the development of HYENAS. This decision could unfortunately result in job losses.
We fully understand that this has a significant impact on our employees, whether they are directly affected or not, and we sincerely apologize for this.
We have always aimed to operate as a people-centered studio, which is at the foundation of our values and culture. As we navigate this incredibly difficult process, we will prioritize supporting our employees every step of the way.
For those whose employment is at risk, we will endeavor to reassign them to other available positions within CA wherever possible, to minimize job losses.
Our commitment to our projects and our players has not changed, we will deliver even more incredible experiences to our players around the world for decades to come.
Although this is a difficult time for CA, we look forward to sharing more about our future plans.
Although this context is most destabilizing, Creative Assembly, the developer of Halo Wars 2, assures that it will do everything in its power to limit job cuts as much as possible if they really happen.
We sincerely hope that the studio will be able to find a solution to maximize the retention of jobs in its ranks.
