This electricity transmission line, which will be deployed over 545 km, will transport 10.4 terawatt hours of clean hydroelectricity from Quebec to New York City.
“We can be very proud of our efforts and our accomplishments over the past 15 years,” said Sophie Brochu, President and CEO of Hydro-Québec, in a press release.
Hydro-Quebec will deliver clean, renewable energy to the Big Apple equivalent to the consumption of one million homes or an approximately 44% reduction in carbon emissions from New York City traffic.
One less obstacle in Maine
In addition, the Supreme Court of Maine validated, on Wednesday, the lease obtained by Hydro-Quebec’s partner in the NECEC project file, i.e. a new transmission line between Quebec and Maine which will provide 1,200 megawatts ( MW) of renewable hydroelectric power to New England.
This is the second favorable decision of the court in connection with this project, following that rendered last August on the subject of the constitutionality of the referendum of November 2021.
Hydro-Québec is still not out of the woods in this case, because pleadings are scheduled for April 2023.
