Saeed Noor Arif Ali has been running a perfume shop in the city’s historic Moazzam Jahi Market for the past 30 years. They manufacture their own perfumes and send them to different states of India.

There are more than 500 types of perfumes in their shop.

Speaking to Independent Urdu, Arif Ali said: ‘We have inherited the task of making perfumes. Our grandfather used to sell perfume. After his passing, Dad and I are now carrying on the business. We are proud to be keeping our family profession alive.’

He said: ‘There is also a religious angle to the use of perfume in the holy month of Ramadan. We believe that perfume was used by the Prophet. There are not only Muslims but also many Hindus, born and brought up in this city of Nawabs, they use perfume regularly and are very proud of their tradition.’

According to Arif Ali: In the holy month of Ramadan, where Muslims make special arrangements for worship, the use of perfume also increases. Of perfume fragrance The whole city smells of it. Everyone likes to wear perfume. Whenever you pass through the old city during this holy month, it is impossible not to smell the perfume.’

A local youth named Abdul Qadoos told Independent Urdu that ‘in the Nizam’s hometown Hyderabad, Deccan, perfume is an essential part of Ramadan. Everyone prefers to wear perfumes instead of body perfumes as they do not contain alcohol and are made from natural ingredients like sandalwood and rose petals. Applying perfume is included in the Sunnah of the Prophet.’

Abd al-Quddus explains that apart from keeping clothes fragrant, perfume is also used to scent mosques. Along with the use of perfume, incense smoke is also given.

‘Friends and friends go to the mosque with a bottle of perfume on Friday or Eid and apply perfume to the worshipers there. They are very happy and so are we. It is a tradition here that when someone comes to visit on the day of Eid, after feeding Sher Khurmah, a box containing fennel and a bottle of perfume is placed in front of them, then they take out a bottle of perfume and apply it.

Traditionally, kings used to offer perfume to their guests on their departure. They were usually packed in beautifully carved perfume jars (glass vessels).

Rose perfume, jasmine, saffron, flower henna, ginda, shamamah, amber, incense and frankincense are the famous perfumes that were preferred by the Mughals and the Nizams.

Allama Abul Fazl, the author of Aain Akbari, writes that Mughal emperors used to burn incense sticks daily and then use perfume. His bath was incomplete without incense and perfume. He used to have a famous perfume which was manufactured and procured in the northeastern state of Assam.

Saeed Noor Arif Ali says that perfumes are generally used based on their effects on the human body.

Warm perfumes such as musk, amber and saffron are used in winter, while cool perfumes such as shamamah, rose, jasmine, khas, kewra and mogra are used in summer and have a cooling effect on the body.
