Hurricane Helene in the US

The devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, which made landfall around midnight Thursday in the Big Bend area of Florida as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, continues to intensify Friday as it moves toward Georgia and the Carolinas.

Residents of these states are preparing to face the worst.

There have reportedly been four deaths: one in Florida, confirmed by Governor Ron DeSantis, from a falling pole; two more in Alamo (Georgia); and another in North Carolina.

Despite being downgraded to a tropical storm this Friday, Helene’s threat is expected to persist as the difficult rescue and search efforts begin for victims, including some elderly people who decided not to evacuate.

In the Cedar Key area, where Helene made her appearance, EFE was able to observe that since early morning the patrols began to clear the trees from the main roads to facilitate the passage of the rescue teams.

In its latest bulletin, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that Helene continues to generate “dangerous wind gusts and flooding that may threaten life in various areas of the southeast and southern Appalachians.”
