Hurricane Helene in the US claims nearly 100 lives

Hurricane Helene had caused, as of this Sunday afternoon, nearly one hundred deaths in six states in the southeast of USAwith North Carolina being the state with the highest number of deaths. Faced with this situation, the Government issued a declaration of major disaster to facilitate relief efforts.

According to the latest official count, the total number of victims amounts to 93 deaths in six states. The most affected is North Carolina with 36 deaths, followed by South Carolina with 25, including two firefighters; Georgia with 17; Florida with 11; Virginia with two; and Tennessee with two other victims.

Death toll from Hurricane Helene in the US may increase

The number of deaths could increase overnight. According to a CBS report, the current number stands at 105, of which 30 are registered in Buncombe County, North Carolina, one of the areas most affected by the hurricane.

Helene made its entry Thursday night as a Category 4 hurricane off the southeast coast of Florida, moving north. Heavy rain and gale-force winds have created devastating scenes, where rescue and recovery teams are currently working hard.
