Sacha Tibbetts, Vice President of Customer Service and Technology for the Grand Cayman Public Power Company (CUC), reported that 3,372 customers are currently without power on the island.

Power outages have been in effect on Grand Cayman Island since 4:00 a.m. local time (9:00 GMT).

Cayman Water Authority Director Gelia Frederick-van said the water supply, which was cut off overnight as Hurricane Beryl approached Grand Cayman, would be restored “as soon as possible.”

Frederick-van explained that priority is currently being given to restoring power to the Cayman Islands Hospital and Doctors Hospital, both located in George Town.

“We have to take a number of steps to assess our pipelines, especially those on coastal roads,” the director of the Cayman Water Authority said.

Although the hurricane has diminished in strength, it remains a major cyclone that hit the Caribbean country this morning with strong winds, heavy rains and storm surge.

West Bay and George Town are reported to be the municipalities most affected by the situation.

In this context, they stressed that Grand Cayman has not yet been declared completely safe due to tropical storm force winds and potential hazards. They therefore asked residents to stay at home until further instructions are received.

Hurricane warnings extend from the Cayman Islands to the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, covering from Chetumal on the border with Belize to Cabo Catoche, and including Cozumel and Cancun.

Tropical storm warnings have also been issued for the coast of Belize, stretching from this city in Central America to Chetumal, and for the coast of Mexico, stretching from Cancun to Campeche.
