This data is known following St. Vincent and the Grenadines reported one death on Monday from the hurricane, which has reached Category 5 status.

Mitchell said they had not received any details on the situation in Carriacou and Petite Martinique until today because they were unable to establish communication with those islands the day before.

“The situation is grim,” said the prime minister, who explained that there is no electricity and that the hurricane has caused “almost complete destruction of homes and infrastructure.”

The Caribbean Community (Caricom), which includes Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, will hold a virtual meeting today to assess the damage and design a collective response.

Caricom Chairman and President of Guyana, Irfaan Aliindicated that the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), based in Barbados, is already working to mobilize and coordinate assistance.

Beryl is heading toward Jamaica, where it might reach the island on Wednesday, and is also threatening the south of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The first hurricane of the Atlantic season remains a dangerous system with maximum sustained winds of 270 kilometers per hour.
