Hurricane Beryl is now a Category 5: “potentially catastrophic”

MÉRIDA.- The United States National Hurricane Center announced tonight that the huracán Beryl became a category 5, “potentially catastrophic.”

In its 9 p.m. Yucatan time report, the U.S. agency said Beryl is moving west-northwest at 35 km/h. It is forecast to continue moving rapidly west-northwestward over the next two days.

On a possible track, the center of Beryl will move rapidly across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea tonight and tomorrow. It is forecast to pass near Jamaica on Wednesday.

Recent data from NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds increased to near 160 mph (260 km/h) with higher gusts.

Beryl is now a “potentially catastrophic” Category 5 hurricane on the hurricane scale. Saffir-SimpsonFluctuations in strength are likely through tomorrow, but Beryl is still expected to remain a major hurricane as it moves into the Caribbean and passes near Jamaica.

From then on it would weaken, although it would continue to be a hurricane as it passed through the
northwestern Caribbean. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km).

There is currently a hurricane warning for Jamaica and a tropical storm warning for the southern coast of the Dominican Republic and the southern coast of Haiti.
