According to the latest SMN statement, at 18:00 local time (00:00 GMT on Wednesday), Beryl was located at a distance of 580 kilometers east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and 1,695 kilometers east-southeast of Cancún, Quintana Roo.
Hurricane Beryl advances towards the Yucatan Peninsula
Under these circumstances, the National Meteorological Service of Mexico, in collaboration with the United States National Hurricane Center, has declared a hurricane warning zone from Cabo Catoche to Chetumal, in Quintana Roo.
So far, the agency has reported that the system has no impact on the Mexican coasts. However, it is expected that from Thursday, the cloud bands of Beryl will cause intense to torrential rains, strong winds and high waves in the Yucatan Peninsula.
Given these circumstances, the SMN suggests paying attention to its alerts and following the instructions of state authorities and Civil Protection.
On Monday, the SMN warned of a possible double impact from Beryl in Mexico. It is expected to make landfall in Quintana Roo, the country’s main tourist destination, between Thursday and Friday, and then reach Veracruz in the Gulf of Mexico between Sunday and Monday of next week.
Hurricane Beryl, which has killed four people in the Caribbean islands, sets an alarming precedent as the first major hurricane to form in the Atlantic at this time of year, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned on Tuesday.
López Obrador said that at this time there is no guarantee that the hurricane will be very intense or that it will directly impact Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo, or any other town. That is not yet certain.
During the current Atlantic hurricane season, Mexico has experienced the passage of two tropical storms.
On June 20, Hurricane Alberto caused six deaths in Nuevo León, a state located on Mexico’s northern border. It also caused material damage and flooding in Monterrey, Mexico’s second most populous city.
The second hurricane was Chris, which made landfall in the early hours of Monday, July 1, in the state of Veracruz.
In May, Mexican authorities predicted the formation of up to 41 named cyclones in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, with the possibility of at least five of them affecting the country.
