Hurricane Beryl intensifies in the Atlantic: this is the latest report

MERIDA.- The huracán Beryl is rapidly intensifying and is expected to become a major hurricane between Sunday and Monday, the US National Hurricane Center reported.

In its 3 a.m. Merida time bulletin on Sunday, the U.S. agency reported that Beryl is moving rapidly westward at 20 mph (33 km/h). Continued rapid west-northwestward motion is expected during the next few days.

On track, the center of Beryl is expected to move across the Windward Islands on Monday morning and across the southeastern Caribbean Sea Monday night into Tuesday.

Hurricane Beryl Forecast

The cyclone’s maximum sustained winds have increased to 155 km/h (95 mph), with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast through Sunday, making Beryl an “extremely dangerous hurricane” before it reaches the Windward Islands.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 km (19 mi) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 130 km (80 mi).

Hurricane warnings are currently in effect for:

  • Barbados
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Granada

There is a storm warning in Martinique and Tobago, as well as a watch in the Dominican Republic.

What to do during a tropical cyclone?

According to the Mexican government’s website, when a meteorological alert is issued that a cyclone will affect the national territory it is recommended:

  • Stay calm and reassure your family members.
  • Keep the battery-operated radio on for information or instructions regarding the hurricane.
  • Keep your home’s roof, drains, gutters and sewers clean
  • Disconnect all appliances and the electrical power switch
  • Turn off the gas and water valves
  • Stay away from doors and windows
  • Do not light candles or votive candles and use battery-operated lamps.
  • If the wind opens a door or window, do not advance towards it head on.
  • Repair/secure roofs, windows and walls to prevent further damage to your home
  • Take valuables to higher places and leave those that might fall on the ground.
  • Prepare a backpack with important documents (in a sealed plastic bag), canned food, water, first aid kit, radio and battery-operated flashlight.
  • Do not leave your home or shelter until authorities inform you that the danger is over.

Hurricane alert traffic light

The federal government has a Early Warning System for Tropical Cyclones (SIAT-CT), which consists of two phases “Cyclone Approaching” and “Cyclone Moving Away”, but both are divided into five alert levels identified by a color code:

  • Blue alert: Minimal danger
  • Green alert: Low danger
  • Yellow alert: Moderate danger
  • Orange alert: High danger
  • Red alert: Maximum danger
