Hurricane Beryl hits the Yucatan Peninsula and moves north

During the early hours of Friday, the core of Hurricane Beryl, which reached the maximum category 5 in the Caribbean, made landfall in Tulum, on the western coast of Mexico, with a category 2. It is currently moving over the peninsula mexicana of Yucatan with “dangerous” hurricane-force winds, storm surge and damaging waves, according to the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Beryl, which made landfall in Tulum on Mexico’s west coast early Friday as a Category 2 hurricane, is expected to maintain that strength as it heads toward Texas in the United States.

Beryl arrives in the Yucatan Peninsula

The cyclone is located 25 kilometers north-northwest of Tulum and 1,175 kilometers east-southeast of Brownsville, Texas, on the border with Mexico, equivalent to 15 miles and 730 miles respectively.

The first Atlantic hurricane of the season has maximum sustained winds of 160 kilometers per hour (100 mph), according to the latest NHC bulletin.

Beryl is expected to appear in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico tonight and then move toward northeastern Mexico and southern Texas (USA) by the end of the week.
