Hurricane Beryl causes “major damage” to Grenada

The Prime Minister of the island of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, said on Monday followingnoon that Hurricane Beryl hit the country causing “great damage“on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, where the eye of the Category 4 hurricane entered.

“There is no doubt that the damage in Carriacou and Petite Martinique is extreme,” Mitchell said at a news conference.

He also said that the governor of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Kevin Andrew, reported that “there was devastation everywhere.”

The president said he had seen damage to buildings and several reports of roofs blown off, including the central police station and the roof of one of the hospitals.

Hurricane Beryl affected “almost all homes”

Almost all homes have been affected and there is no electricity on any of the islands, while communications remain difficult.”Mitchell added.

In this context, Mitchell stressed that he is optimistic and hopes that by late followingnoon “it is safe to send help.”

As soon as it is safe I will travel to Carriacou to make an official assessment of the damage and give a full report to the nation.“, said Mitchell, who is currently in Granada, where “strong winds, storm surges and rainfall.”

More than 3,000 refugees

Mitchell also said that some 3,000 people are sheltering in more than 100 shelters on the island, and that the government will do everything possible to keep them safe.

The President also explained that he had instructed the Housing Authority to make available to the citizens of Carriacou and Petite Martinique and the Ministry of Finance of Petite Martinique and Carriacou to identify local suppliers.

Mitchell said early Monday he was optimistic that the Caribbean Community (Caricom) would assist him following the impact of the powerful hurricane.
