A California police officer was killed and another was injured when a police helicopter landed in the water in Orange County on Saturday night.
The helicopter crashed into the water in Newport Beach, regarding 40 miles south of Los Angeles, in the presence of a large crowd sitting on the beach. According to local reports.
Nicholas Vella, 44, of the Huntington Beach Police Department, a 14-year-old senior, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, Police Chief Eric Barra said at a press conference Saturday by the night.
Vella and her accomplice were rescued from the water and taken to a local crash center following the accident.
The other officer, a 16-year-old senior, is in stable condition at the trauma center. officials said.
It is not clear what caused the accident. The plane was in the water at 8 pm local time.
Authorities confirmed the helicopter belonged to neighboring Huntington Beach Police.
