Huntington Beach police helicopter crashes in California waters, killing officer Nicholas Vella

A California police officer was killed and another was injured when a police helicopter landed in the water in Orange County on Saturday night.

The helicopter crashed into the water in Newport Beach, about 40 miles south of Los Angeles, in the presence of a large crowd sitting on the beach. According to local reports.

Nicholas Vella, 44, of the Huntington Beach Police Department, a 14-year-old senior, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, Police Chief Eric Barra said at a press conference Saturday by the night.

Vella and her accomplice were rescued from the water and taken to a local crash center after the accident.

The other officer, a 16-year-old senior, is in stable condition at the trauma center. officials said.

It is not clear what caused the accident. The plane was in the water at 8 pm local time.

Authorities confirmed the helicopter belonged to neighboring Huntington Beach Police.

“We can confirm that our police helicopter, HB1, landed in the Newport Beach area. Rescue operations are underway and more information will be released when it becomes available,” he said. The department wrote on Twitter..

Earlier on Friday, another helicopter fell into the sea In front of hundreds of beach travelers off the coast of Miami in Florida. No casualties were reported in the accident.
