Hunting: the sale of ammunition in tobacco shops tested in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques from January 1

This is one of the new features for 2024: cartridges for hunting weapons will now be on sale in tobacco shops. Before this measure, taken by the government last November, is applied throughout France, it will be tested from January 1 in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques according to our colleagues at France Inter.

According to the radio, informed by the federation of tobacconists of France and the federation of hunters of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, several tobacco shops in the department will be selected to sell this ammunition.

A “regulatory” and “simple” procedure

To be eligible, tobacconists will have to obtain an “exclusive sale of ammunition” certification, which is obtained following two days of training, and enter into an agreement with a referent gunsmith to obtain approval from the prefect.

The ammunition will not be on sale over the counter, and “will be distributed to customers following verification of the conformity of the hunting license (…) it is a procedure which is intended to be regulatory and simple at the same time”, specifies to France Inter Philippe Coy, tobacconist in Béarn and president of the federation of tobacconists of France.

After managing packages, concierge services and even depositing cash, tobacconists are further expanding their scope of activity with the sale of cartridges for hunting weapons. This government measure allows hunters, especially those who live in remote areas, to travel less to stock up on ammunition.
