In a remote Swedish town with rich subsoil, the prospect of the opening of a gold mine offers the population unexpected hope of development. The project, led by the ambitious Markus Lindmark, with whom a South African extraction company is to be associated, however unleashes the wrath of local environmental activists, who increase intimidation and acts of sabotage. At issue: fears linked to the risk of groundwater pollution. When Markus, driving his car, is targeted by a mysterious shooter lurking in the forest, the local police take charge of the case. Peter, a very young recruit, whose stepfather, Carl, is none other than Markus’ brother, will thus carry out his first investigations under the supervision of inspector Mans Rikardson – and under the benevolent gaze of Erik Bäckström, his uncle, a former outstanding investigator whose inflexible integrity led him to surrender his badge. At the same time, Markus also asks Erik to find the author of his attack…
Family loyalties
The vast expanses of Swedish Lapland, dominated by marshes and pine and birch forests, provide a sumptuous setting for this tense thriller, with a breathtaking pace, shot through with muted violence. The series follows two films – respectively made in 1996 and 2011 – which already retraced the tribulations of Erik Bäckström (Rolf Lassgard), a pugnacious and honest police officer whose intransigence pushed him towards the exit. Following him, the young and idealistic Peter rescues colleagues who are a little too quick to close cases from their lethargy. Because in this small rural community united around an extraction project which arouses the hope of a new golden age, everything (family loyalties, feelings and above all economic profits) conspire to block the path to the truth. If the plot makes no mystery of the identity of the culprits, it is to better underline this observation: when such serious interests are at stake, there is no one more blind than he who does not want to see.
