Joe Biden thought he was done with the political burden that this son has continued to represent, who has become the target of Republicans, determined to exploit his mistakes to discredit the President. Hunter has resolved to plead guilty to two separate cases of tax evasion and a weapons violation, a transaction which, if accepted by the judge (hearing is scheduled for July 26), will end to five years of investigation and will save the son Biden from going to prison.
Golf club or hostess box
The ace ! Republicans have released the testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee of IRS agent Gary Shapley. Having become a whistleblower, he made a lot of scabrous revelations regarding Hunter Biden’s false tax returns, but also regarding his way of life. The payment of prostitutes was, for example, disguised as professional fees and an alleged golf club membership actually concealed membership in a sex club in Los Angeles.
Shapley also provided documents that tend to buttress the main Republican criticisms of Hunter Biden: his propensity to capitalize on his father’s reputation and networks, especially when he was vice-president of Barack Obama, 2009 to 2016, to promote its business, particularly in China and Ukraine. Without knowing, however, whether or not Joe Biden played the game.
Anomalies
Gary Shapley especially accuses the Department of Justice of having very limply conducted the investigation into suspicions of tax evasion. This reproach is corroborated by an investigator from the IRS, whose deposition was also published Thursday, but on condition of anonymity. This witness mentions “totally abnormal” practices such as the prohibition which was served on him to question the children of Hunter Biden, when the latter had requested an exemption for payments in their favor. It was a routine procedure, but obviously, in the case of the President’s grandchildren, the initiative was disturbing.
A prosecutor appointed by Trump
The Department of Justice brushed aside these accusations, recalling that the Attorney General of Delaware, David Weiss, had full latitude to conduct the investigation as he wanted. Appointed by Donald Trump, he cannot be suspected of wanting to spare the Biden family. Shapley, however, assures that he would have mentioned obstacles to his work.
The charges once morest Hunter Biden are relatively minor and the legal page might be quickly turned. There remains for Joe Biden the moral and political cost, all the heavier to bear as the President keeps repeating that he is “proud” of his son. The suffering must be all the greater since he would certainly have liked to see Hunter campaign alongside him, as he did in 2008.
