This season of the series is a continuation of the eight-episode first season ‘Our Planet’ which aired earlier in 2019.

It has now been revealed that crew members had a very close encounter with sharks while filming the show in the Pacific waters north of the US state of Hawaii.

The team, which won an Emmy Award for the series, were taking shots of whales in the ocean off Leasin, one of Hawaii’s northwestern islands, when they were attacked by a shark. Hungry sharks tore large holes in their inflatable rubber boats.

Speaking to Radio Times, show director Toby Nolan said the shark’s behavior was ‘very unusual’.

He added that the fish looked ‘incredibly hungry’.

The director added: ‘This water beast came hurtling towards us and this tiger shark jumped on the boat and tore a big hole in it that blew the whole boat apart.’

He added: ‘We were trying to push him away but we just couldn’t. It was terrifying. It was the second shark that attacked us that day.’

‘She was incredibly hungry because there was probably a shortage of natural food and she was trying to eat everything in the water,’ explained Nolan.

Series producer Ho Cardi told Forbes that two sharks attacked the team.

He said: ‘It was like escaping from their jaws. The crew panicked and immediately made an emergency landing on the beach.’

Cardi said the original plan was to shoot the tiger sharks waiting underwater in the shallows off the coast of Lisien.

According to him: ‘Suffice it to say we couldn’t shoot them underwater.’
