Orbán’s visit to Kyiv:
“I did not want to convince the president, but rather to sound out the Ukrainians’ position on the peace process.” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made this statement in Kyiv to the editor of the Swiss “Weltwoche”, Roger Köppel.
In a short interview immediately afterwards, Köppel spoke to Orbán about the “somewhat frosty meeting” with Zelenskyj. The Prime Minister made it clear that he had no intention of making any concrete proposals to the President of Ukraine. As Chairman of the EU Council Presidency, he wanted to prepare a template for the heads of state and government on how to reach a peace agreement in Ukraine.
Please reconsider the logic
Because the efforts so far have been very time-consuming and therefore require a high level of blood sacrifice, Orbán actually suggested to his host that he rethink the logic and prefer a ceasefire before (further) negotiations on the peace process are scheduled. Orbán admitted to the Weltwoche that Zelensky was “not exactly happy about this move”. The president had pointed out that he had had bad experiences with ceasefire agreements.
On the road for peace mission
When asked about the purpose of his trip to Kyiv, Orbán said that anyone who wants to dictate will fail, and anyone who wants to be useful and help must first put aside their own ego. The decisive question is war or peace, the position of Ukraine and Russia, and the interests of the EU in this conflict. How the EU presents itself to the outside world depends on the major countries. “Only if the Germans, French, and Italians act as one will there be changes here.” That is why his peace mission first took him to Berlin, Rome, and Paris, the Hungarian Prime Minister explained the recent trips abroad immediately before taking over the EU presidency.
