Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó arrived on a working visit to Belarus. The program of the visit includes talks with Belarusian counterpart Sergei Aleinik and Economy Minister Alexander Chervyakov, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said on Twitter. Mr. Szijjarto wrote on Facebook (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) that at the negotiations in Minsk he would advocate for the speedy achievement of peace in Ukraine.
“The war in Ukraine is getting more and more violent, with more people dying as a result of the fighting. Now we need to save human lives, and this can only be done with peace. Hungary expects all members of the international community to act to ensure immediate peace and avoid steps that might prolong the escalation,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister wrote.
He stated that because of this visit, many will obviously criticize him. According to him, Hungary’s position is to keep communication channels open. “If we hadn’t behaved like this, I wouldn’t have been able to convey the message of the call to peace today,” Mr. Szijjártó concluded.
During the meeting itself, which is taking place in Minsk, Sergei Aleinik said that Belarus is interested in developing relations with Hungary. “We know how to listen and hear each other,” said the Belarusian minister (quoted from “Belta”).
