171 Syrian refugees have been killed and hundreds injured in Israeli attacks on Lebanon in 12 days, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday, as bombing campaigns across the country escalate.

The Observatory confirmed that Israeli bombardments in various areas on Thursday killed five Syrian refugees in Lebanon, including a woman, a girl and three men, bringing the number of refugees killed since September 21 last year to 171 people, including 33 women and 46 children.

Israel continues to carry out heavy attacks across Lebanon, especially in the south, the Bekaa and the southern suburbs of Beirut, killing hundreds and injuring thousands, including Syrian refugees.

Israel says it targets Hezbollah sites, warehouses and headquarters, and Hezbollah in turn launches cross-border attacks on Israeli territory, while world powers have called for a quell in the conflict between the two factions.

The Syrian Observatory condemned these attacks “against civilians” and called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to “urgently intervene to protect the population, including refugees”.

He called for safe corridors to be provided to residents so they can flee targeted areas and for necessary humanitarian assistance such as food, medicine and shelter to be provided to affected families.

He pointed out that since the attacks began in October 2023, the number of Syrian refugee deaths caused by Israeli attacks in Lebanon has increased to 202, including 36 women and 50 children, and dozens of others were injured.

According to official data, more than 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon since October 2023, including more than 1,000 people since the violent air strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut on September 23.

Israel’s attack on Lebanon has displaced more than one million people inside and outside Lebanon.

Lebanese Health Minister Firas Al-Abyad said on Thursday that some 97 ambulance and rescue workers were among the dead killed by Israeli fire, 40 of them in the past three days.

It is worth noting that Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamiya told Reuters on Friday that the Israeli attack near the Masna border crossing with Syria had cut off the escape route of “hundreds of thousands of people” in the past.

Hamiya explained that the attack occurred after crossing the border, but within Lebanese territory. He said it created a 4-meter-wide hole.

The Israeli army has not yet commented on the attack.

The incidents come about a week after Israel bombed the Mutariba crossing linking Syrian and Lebanese territory. The Israeli army said at the time that its purpose was to “prevent the transfer of fighting means to Hezbollah,” and Syrian TV reported that the move resulted in eight injuries.
