On the weekend before the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel with more than 1,100 deaths, demonstrations are taking place in Hamburg today. The demonstration is directed against the actions of the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.
The person who registered the demonstration had announced 5,500 participants. The police previously spoke of 1,500 people. But at the beginning of the rally on Steindamm in St. Georg there were less than 500 people who gathered.
No provocations or anti-Semitic behavior
The demonstrators present a colorful picture with many Palestine flags and scarves. In contrast, there were few posters and banners. The mood so far is peaceful. No provocations or anti-Semitic behavior were perceived.
Police officers observe the rally at Steindamm.
The event is observed by a large police force. In order to be able to interpret the content of the demonstration without any doubt, it is also observed by Islamic scholars from the police.
Demonstration march from St. Georg to Gänsemarkt
The plan is to march in the afternoon along Mönckebergstrasse past the vigil for Israel and the town hall to the Gänsemarkt. According to NDR information, the person who registered the demonstration comes from the environment of the pro-Palestinian protest camp that was set up on the moor pasture for months.
According to Palestinian information, the Israeli army has killed more than 41,000 Palestinians since October 7, 2023.
The hurdles for banning demonstrations are too high
The Hamburg police would have liked to ban the demonstration, but the assembly authorities saw no possibility of a ban because the hurdles are very high. However, the police have provided the applicant with information. For example, Israel’s right to exist must not be questioned at any time.
Demonstrations nationwide
The Federal Minister of the Interior (SPD) has announced that she wants to take tough action if there are anti-Semitic statements at the rallies. Demonstrations are planned nationwide in the coming days.
