The Foreign Office in Islamabad said in a statement today that the government and people of Pakistan express their heartfelt condolences over the loss of life and property caused by heavy rains and floods in several provinces of Afghanistan.

The statement said: ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, the injured and the communities affected by this natural disaster and we pray for the speedy recovery of the missing.

The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration told AFP that more than 200 people were killed in Baghlan alone, while thousands of houses were damaged or destroyed.

National Program Officer Mohammad Faheem Safi, who heads the IOM’s emergency response, said 1,500 houses were damaged or destroyed in a district of Baghlani Jadid, while 100 people lost their lives, citing official figures.

The rains on Friday also caused heavy damage in northeastern Badakhshan province, central Ghor province and western Herat, officials said.

According to the Ministry of Defense, rescue workers are reaching the spot to rescue the injured and trapped people.

Ahmad Siyar Sajid, head of the disaster management department in northern Takhar province, said: ‘Apart from human deaths, these floods also caused huge financial losses to people.’

He said that 20 people lost their lives in the flood in Takhar. The Air Force says that following the weather cleared on Saturday, it has started an operation to move people to safer places and more than 100 injured have been taken to hospital.
