Hundreds of children killed during the Holocaust will be honored in Šiauliai

As reported by the Lithuanian Jewish (Lithvak) community, 80 years ago, on November 5, 1943, one of the most brutal crimes of the Holocaust was committed in Šiauliai. During the so-called “children’s action”, 725 children were taken from the Jews and taken in freight cars to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where they were killed.

The Lithuanian Jewish (Lithvak) community, together with the Jewish communities of Šiauliai County and Šiauliai Region, invites you to remember and honor the victims of this crime.

On Sunday at noon, the memory of the murdered children will be honored at the memorial stone at the intersection of Trakai/Ežero streets, which marks the gate of the Šiauliai Jewish ghetto. Later, the memory procession will move towards Chaim Frenkel’s villa, where the commemoration will take place.

During the commemoration, the Jewish community of Šiauliai County, together with Israel’s Yad Vashem (Yad Vashem) Museum, will open an exhibition specially prepared for the 80th anniversary of this tragic event. It contains photos of children killed during the “children’s action” in the Šiauliai ghetto, kept in the exhibition of the Israeli Holocaust Memorial.

Faina Kukliansky, head of the Lithuanian Jewish (Litvaks) community, Naumas Glezeris, chairman of the Šiauliai Region Jewish Community, Sania Kerbelis, chairman of the Šiauliai County Jewish Community, Artūras Visockas, mayor of Šiauliai, representatives of the Israeli and German embassies, and other guests will participate in the event.

Before World War II, more than 8,500 Jews lived in Šiauliai. Only about 500 Šiauliai Jews managed to survive the Holocaust.
